What Does It Mean to be Carbon Neutral?

Carbon neutral: what exactly does it mean? It’s said that 6 out of 10 consumers either do not know or incorrectly define it. But the ones who are willing to change their ways to offset the effects of climate change, however, know the correct definition of the term. So, what does it mean? 

To put it simply, carbon neutral means having a balance of emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere in natural sinks such as soil, forests, and the oceans. When these natural sinks are disturbed whether through forest fires or logging, the carbon stored within them is released into the atmosphere which is why it’s so important to reduce our carbon emissions. 

But what about artificial carbon sinks? Do they work as well as natural sinks in absorbing carbon? Though they are capable of removing carbon from the atmosphere, there are currently no artificial carbon sinks that can remove enough carbon to fight global warming. 

Carbon neutrality is a term that has been used around for years and many brands are doing their part in maintaining it. Apple has committed to be carbon neutral by 2030 in terms of their supply chain and products. Neutral Foods, the first carbon-neutral company in the US, has stated that they will change what cows eat so that they produce less methane. And with the issues of climate change, brands are veering towards becoming more sustainable and carbon neutral than ever before.

Though it’s not possible to completely offset carbon, it is important we take steps to understanding how to achieve carbon neutrality for the future of our planet.
