Glife - the future of food in Southeast Asia

In a world that is continuously urbanizing world, the demand for food production has doubled and Southeast Asia, a region of the world that prioritizes food security, is also having trouble in maintaining it. Combined with a growing population, changing consumer preferences and the Covid-19 pandemic, it only seeks to highlight the challenges being faced by the region.

Food Security

Southeast Asia’s food security is very much affected by the purchasing power of households. With issues such as increased prices and labor shortage, it only raises questions on the strength of the region’s food security, showing how one small change can make a big difference.

Food Economy

The agri-food industry is at the heart of Southeast Asia’s economy and plays an important role in supporting people’s livelihoods. In the year 2019, the agri-food sector supported about 40% of job in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. However, though the food economy has managed to stay resilient since the Covid-19 pandemic, there are still challenges to address.

With all these challenges, what are some of the solutions to at least mitigate some of these existing problems?

Sustainable Food Systems

We all want to build a food future that is not only strong but sustainable. Though it may be tough, it is achievable if we take careful measures to get there. Though improving natural resources and reducing food waste are great initiatives, it has been widely agreed that education plays a key part in implementing change. By teaching our future generations the skills and knowledge to build and maintain a sustainable food future, we will then begin to see real and positive changes.

Innovation in Foodtech

Just like technology, foodtech trends are always changing to address the growing demands of the industry. Nowhere else are these trends growing at a rapid pace than in Southeast Asia, where new and innovative ideas are integral to staying ahead of the game. Plus, with consumers making more health-conscious choices when it comes to food options, understanding customer attitude is also important.

Though technology may not always be the main solution, it does play a key part in addressing issues in many industries, food security and food economy included.

By achieving a sustainable food future resilient to changes through technology, it can help secure a brighter future for our generations to come and we’re hopeful that Glife’s technological initiatives can help to bring about that future for Southeast Asia.
